PLAYERS
IN THE CLASSROOM
It's not
everyday you get to say that you were
learning along side two professional footballers, but that has been the case
this term at the study centre. Sheffield Wednesdays first team and academy
players have been joining in at the study centre, supporting the lessons and
offering an insight into the life of a player.
Some pupils interviewed the
players about the greatest game they'd ever played in, while some pupils had
players accompany them on ground tours to tell them exactly what its like to
walk out at Hillsborough in front of 25,000 supporters.
Sheffield Wednesday captain Lee Bullen, was interviewed by a group of
children all about his career, one question about which clubs he had played
for turned into a discussion about how many different countries he had
played in.
The players have not only
helped out in the classroom whilst the children were in the centre but, have
also provided time for the centre to shoot video footage of them, like the
website introduction on our home page. Four players, two from the first team
and two from the academy also found time to attend our end of term
presentation evening. The study centre team wish to thank Brian Laws and
Sean McAuley as well as all of the players in the senior and academy squads
for their support of the study centre.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS SPRING 2008
The Study Centre celebrated the end of
the Spring term in style with a massive presentation event in the club's
Chatsworth Suite.
More than 300 people joined in the celebration that saw nearly 100 learners
receive certificates and awards from the night's special guests
Etienne Esajas and Jermaine Johnson from the first team and Aaron Mulligan
and Mukhtar Mohammed from the clubs academy side.
The evening is aimed at celebrating the hard work of the youngsters who have attended the centre's Playing for Success programme (which is also celebrating its 10th anniversary this year) from September. The evening kicked off with a video showcasing what the learners had been up to during the term and included clips of speed stacking (used to teach averages), virtual athletics (used to teach rank order and graphs) and a video ground tour.
Following the video Centre Tutor Lynn gave an introduction about the Study Centre and this term's activities before beginning the presentation of certificates and work to each learner.
There was a special thank you to all the volunteer mentors who gave their time freely to help the young people at the centre, to the drivers and escorts who always get the learners to and from the Study Centre safely and to the club for their continued support to the programme.
The evening was rounded off with a set of special awards for learners from each class who had done something during the term which had really stuck in the minds of the centre staff as being something particularly kind or helpful or for a sustained effort and commitment throughout the term.
All the staff at the centre wish to thank everyone who attended the presentation evening and the staff at Sheffield Wednesday for making the night so enjoyable.
